引言不知道写些什么，就回顾一下这个坑吧。2003年，在吞拿山翻译完J.R.R. 托尔金致米尔顿·沃德曼的长信（信笺131号）之后，便开始翻译整理托尔金创作《魔戒之王》以及艰难出版的经过内容。记得那时我所用的ID还叫Rosicrucian，但由于很多朋友表示根本记不住，所以后来便又用回了现在的网名。一晃九年过去，这个不怎么深的坑，总算是把土全都挖出来了，并且整理为三个部分发表。至于为什么挖了这么久才挖完……呃……
本文内容主要资料译自汉弗莱·卡朋特（Humphrey Carpenter）所著《J.R.R. 托尔金传》（J.R.R. Tolkien a biography）以及《吉光片羽》（The Inklings）这两本书，此外由卡朋特先生编辑、托尔金三子克里斯托弗·托尔金协助完成的《J.R.R. 托尔金信笺集》（The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien）中与《魔戒之王》有关的信件内容也进行了翻译和选编。
这里是第一部分“缘起与创作”，主记1937年至1949年间托尔金创作《魔戒之王》的历程（文中带*号部分为我做的补注）。
